LaunchPad SBDC focuses on a company’s investor presentation as a good reflection of its underlying business plan and strategies. For this reason, LaunchPad SBDC does not usually engage with very early stage companies. The typical LaunchPad SBDC company has used early stage friends and family or angel funding to create its business and go-to market plans before engaging with LaunchPad SBDC. The LaunchPad SBDC experience is aimed at the first round of institutional or corporate venture investment.
LaunchPad SBDC is hosted by OCTANe (Orange County Technology Action Network), a private economic development non-profit organization that was created in 2002 by members of the business and education communities in Orange County, California to support the growth and sustainability of tech and medtech companies in the County. OCTANe recognized that one of the best ways to encourage technology business development was to support new entrepreneurs and startup companies. One of the critical needs of these companies is investment; to meet this need, OCTANe established LaunchPad to provide assistance to startup tech and med tech companies to secure these critical financial investments. In 2011, LaunchPad became a Small Business Development Center (SBDC) within California’s Orange County Inland Empire SBDC Network which is funded in part through a Cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
When combining the funding raised by early stage companies with the capital infused to LaunchPad SBDC alumni in subsequent rounds of financing, the total capital obtained by LaunchPad SBDC companies since 2008 has been $1.4 billion.
